Simran Singh: To Remember

Simran Singh: To Remember
‘To Remember’ is a self-titled show after the artists’ name, Simran, which in Punjabi translates to “the act of remembrance”. This body of work originally began as an exploration of the medium and its history but it soon evolved to an act of remembering who she is, why she creates, and her worth. It is easy to feel like a failure after graduating when you see your fellow art peers are succeeding where you aren’t. It is easy to compare oneself to another’s own journey. But if the artist can keep creating, they know their worth. It is about remembering why they started creating art and why they should keep going.
Simran Singh is an emerging multidisciplinary Illustrator and Artist who graduated from OCAD University in Toronto. She uses her work to explore different perspectives, voices that have been historically marginalized or completely erased and hopes to bring them to the light. After reading Austin Kleon’s book, ‘Keep Going’, she found a motto that she wants to live by in her personal and professional career. Inspired by the signs of National Parks, I want to “leave the world better than I found it”. Simran wants to do right by those who stood by her as a youth and leave as much of a positive impact on my community as they had on her.
Workshop Description: In this workshop, the artist will lead participants through basic embroidery stitches and techniques to embroider a flower during the 1-hour session. This workshop will also detail a talk about Embroidery as a medium with important ties to Arts & Craft as well as Punjabi Heritage, all of which are relevant to Simran as an artist. All materials will be supplied at the workshop, the artist just asks that participants bring an open mind and positivity.
