Vinta’s been working up some brand new compositions and arrangements of traditional European fiddle music to record on our next album (a follow-up to our first full-length Canadian Folk Music Award winning album Beacons).
With a couple weeks of a rehearsal residency at Silence in Guelph, this is the natural venue to perform what is mostly brand new arrangements, never performed before! Come hear these tunes, fresh, for the first time ever!
Vinta is Nathan Smith, Emilyn Stam, John David Williams, and Robert Alan Mackie, four dynamic multi-instrumentalists and close friends sharing a common love of European traditional music and dance. A decade of these four musicians hanging out at fiddle jams around Toronto has culminated in this quartet, bringing new intensity to old tunes, and growing new tunes from old sources. Vinta is making music that is powerful, profound, and danceable.Theyve released 9 EPs of traditional music, toured in France, Germany, and Belgium, and released an album of original tunes Beacons, which is the 2024 recipient of the Canadian Folk Music Award for Composers of the Year. Vinta brings you into their love of European traditional fiddle music, from the familiar romantic atmosphere of French waltzes and mazurkas, to the unexpected, often ethereal sounds of rural folk dance music from across the continent.
“Vinta provides a huge breath of fresh air with their wonderful, creative reimagining of Balfolk dance forms. Their original compositions blend perfectly with their traditional material and their playing is uniformly top notch.
What really strikes me are their completely sympathetic arrangements and tuned in, dynamic ensemble playing; always on the same page and always finding the right unanimous groove.
Brilliant!”
