After hosting two concerts in Guelph, featuring the poetry of Rumi, I now appreciate that many Canadian only know Mowlavi’s poetry (Rumi). Iran, however, boasts dozens of poets, some dating back thousands of years. These poems are still familiar to Persians and especially musicians. In this spirit, it is worth noting that a carpet in the United Nations building is adorned with a famous poem by Saadi Shirazi. The poem is: “Human beings are members of a whole, In creation of one essence and soul. If one member is afflicted with pain, Other members uneasy will remain. If you have no sympathy for human pain, The name of human you cannot retain.” Once a month, beginning in October, I want to share my artistic culture with the community of Guelph. During these Sunday afternoons, I will play and sing music, as well as read translations of great Persian poets.
I hope you can join me.
