Ugly Beauties
Wednesday September 13, 2017

The Ugly Beauties Trio is a configuration of some of Canada’s top improvisers- Marilyn Lerner – piano, Matt Brubeck – cello and Nick Fraser drums. Named for Thelonius Monk’s composition Ugly Beauty, the trio’s music encompasses worlds of improvised music and modern jazz, with strong elements of contemporary classical music. With a repertoire consisting of an organic mixture of both written and improvised material the Ugly Beauties’ sound can best be described as abstract lyricism, with swing and groove as part of the mix!
