PipeDown! Presents: Falcon Jane WSG Cherry Blaster / Fauna

Falcon Jane:
https://falconjane.bandcamp.com/

Cherry Blaster:

Cherry Blaster started as Iulia Ciobanu’s solo electronic/synth project, but like any music baby/child it is perpetually growing into new forms. Juggling the desire to break hearts, blow minds, achieve the optimal shred, and make you dance/feel badass, her music is always only temporarily definable. Cherry Blaster released Sleep Depraved in 2017, her first album to see the light of day after years of discarded bedroom attempts. Since then her music has been featured on Exclaim!, IX Daily, Live in Limbo, and Canadian Beats among others. She hopes one day to be able to concoct something deliciously genre-less, and also to shriek like Courtney Love without expiring into cough attacks.

Silence Presents: New Hermitage

New Hermitage imagines a future in which pollution has decimated the population of the Earth, and dangerously high levels of toxicity have rendered the cities of the world uninhabitable. The surviving humans are forced to live in nomadic clans that wander the sparse wilderness, struggling to claim what little natural resources remain. However, a few solitary people have returned to the cities. With patience and tenderness, these new hermits balance technology with ancient wisdom to work with nature and restore the planet. The music of New Hermitage imagines the soundtrack to their survival, incorporating what these lone individuals might hear among the crumbling cities they call home.

As an ensemble, New Hermitage embodies the work of these hermits by listening to, and improvising with, their immediate environment, like the hermits of their speculative imaginings, their work is shaped by the environment as they in turn give shape to it. Recently split between Halifax and Montreal, New Hermitage is a collection of musicians who individually have been nominated for multiple ECMA and Juno awards and can list Jerry Granelli, the Upstream Orchestra, Gypsophilia, and Symphony Nova Scotia, among others, on their resumes. The group is led by Andrew MacKelvie (woodwinds), and features Ellen Gibling (harp), Ross Burns (guitar), and India Gailey (cello).

Their first release, one, is a collection of compositions by Andrew MacKelvie that came out in September, 2017. Of one, Andrew Patterson, creative director of the OBEY Convention said; “…. one of the best records I’ve heard come out of Halifax in a good while. Very sumptuous, contemplative chamber jazz”. In 2018 they performed a concert with internationally renowned improviser and bass clarinet virtuoso, Jeff Reilly, which they documented on their Bandcamp page.

They also performed and recorded at the 11th OBEY Convention in Halifax, Nova Scotia. OBEY Convention XI is their second recording and it was released in February of 2019. Their third record is due out later this year on Tombed Visions Records (UK) and features predominantly spontaneously composed pieces and two offerings by Gailey and Gibling. Silence Presents: Kamancello WSG Erso

Doors: 7:30 PM
Show: 8:00 PM
Tickets: $15

Kamancello, comprised of Shahriyar Jamshidi and Raphael Weinroth-Browne, is an East-meets-West duo whose music transcends genres andcultural boundaries. Their highly evocative improvised performances unite the Kurdish kamanche with the classical cello while travelling beyond both musical traditions. The duo has made waves with performances at Montreal’s Place des Arts for Festival du Monde Arabe, the Tirgan Festival at Toronto’s Harbourfrount Centre, the Canadian Opera Company, the Aga Khan Museum’s concert series, and the Cello Biennale Amsterdam. Recorded in one take, their self-titled debut album, which includes 6 improvised pieces, has been met with unanimous critical acclaim. 2019 will see the release of Kamancello’s second full-length record as well as the
group’s orchestral debut as soloists with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra.
