Based in Toronto, Canada, Alex Mason is a singer-songwriter known for his grim baritone, pensive lyrics, and blend of alternative-rock and folk music. Raised in rural Ontario, he absorbed years of music with his mother teaching piano in the basement of his home, but found himself musically as a teenager listening to Elliott Smith, Okkervil River, Tom Waits, and Sufjan Stevens. The result was his first EP “Wistow Lows” released in 2013, and he spent his youth playing bars, clubs, and festivals across the country. In 2015 with the release of his second EP “Jasper”, he embarked on a cross Canada tour by train, developed a following, and eventually moved to Toronto to pursue music more in depth after he graduated.
Along the way, life happened. After losing his father, he returned to Ontario during a stint in Nashville trying his hand as a songwriter. On a harrowing drive back through a snowstorm seeing car after car in the ditch, he realized he had to focus on the art he felt mattered. The experience of this loss taught him to sing what was important and
stay honest. He evolved from his folkier leanings and began embracing the alternative rock and grunge of his teen years, blending the two into a sound that is as much ambient ballads as it is bittersweet torch songs. He is currently touring in support of the release of his first full length debut LP, “Ghost of the Great Lakes”, inspired by hope, loss, and the life lived that has brought him here.
