Gentleman Reg

Gentleman Reg aka Reg Vermue has been performing in Canada since the turn of the millennium, initially garnering attention for his acclaimed full length albums, 2002’s Make Me Pretty and 2004’s Darby & Joan, both released on seminal Canadian label Three Gut Records; A label which he helped form.

In the U.S. Gentleman Reg is best known for being featured in the 2006 John Cameron Mitchell Film, ‘Shortbus’, in which he made a brief cameo and contributed to the films soundtrack. Around this time he could also often be seen singing with Broken Social Scene and The Hidden Cameras.

Signed to Arts & Crafts in 2008, he first released the E.P. Little Buildings, a compilation of tracks from his previous albums. His first full length album for Arts & Crafts, Jet Black was released in 2009 and was followed in the same year
by the Heavy Head E.P. He was subsequently dropped by Arts & Crafts in 2010 and released the album Leisure Life in 2012 independently.

Since then he has focused on another band Light Fires with Jamie Bunton, releasing their debut album in 2013, and his drag persona Regina Gently in which he sings all original  music and released a full length album in 2020. The pedigree of the Gentleman Reg band is beyond extensive and over the years has included members of such bands as Arcade Fire, Islands, Constantines, Great Lake Swimmers, The Weakerthans, Ohbijou, The Unicorns, Royal City, The Hidden Cameras, and Owen Pallett.

Kelly McMichael is an artist and producer based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, originally from Peterborough Ontario. A versatile multi-instrumentalist who can sling a guitar, serenade on piano and program beats in equal measure, McMichael has toured North America and Europe and offered backing to The Burning Hell, Gentleman Reg, Tim Baker and Sarah Harmer. Kelly’s early songwriting career was established through DIY electronic projects Renders and Rouge during her time in Ontario. Her musical interests cover a broad range of pop /rock production styles combining retro and futuristic sounds in service of well-crafted songwriting. Her debut LP Waves was a breakthrough release of 2021, garnering a spot on the Polaris Prize shortlist, three Music NL Awards, and the ECMA for Best Rock Recording.

Kelly’s sophomore album is a genreless expansion on the classic sound of her debut. Music that sits in the comfort of its core ideas while being utterly unafraid to try new things. It plays exactly how its maker intended. “I write and record in a way that you’re just giving the song what it needs,” says McMichael. “Why limit the creativity? I don’t want limitations.”

After The Sting Of It arrives September 2024.
