June 17:

Pipedown & GAIN Fest Present:

Sun Junkies

Sun Junkies are a 4 piece garage rock/surf punk band from Brantford, Ontario. Known for their high energy and unpredictable live performances, Sun Junkies combine the melancholic and introspective nature of the 90’s indie scene with the melody forward simplicity of modern day surf rock.

Habit – presented by Kazoo!Fest.

Habit is a four-piece rock group from Guelph, ON. Their brand of post-punk deals in abrupt dynamic shifts, alternative between spare, wiry guitar lines and expressionist splatters of noise. Their songs grapple with the drudgerous monotony and everyday violence of adult life, and their live performances are known for an austere sense of dread punctuated by moments of cacophonous catharsis.

Livers

Livers is the moniker of Danny Webster, a singer songwriter and multi- instrumentalist based out of Toronto, Canada. Raised in a small town in Ontario, Danny was raised on his mother’s love of classical music and his father’s of 80’s metal, becoming fascinated by music from a young age. Almost completely self-taught, he started writing songs as a therapeutic activity after his mother passed when he was 14, leading him to release his first album a few years later. After graduating high school, Danny attended a prestigious jazz program in Toronto but dropped out after a year to put more time in his own creative pursuits. Since then, he has released many singles, EPs, a second album with a third on the way exploring folk, indie rock, country, and pop styles. His lyrics tend to focus on loss, love, grief, fear, and anxiety, listing his main influences as The Beatles, Tame Impala, ABBA, Bon Iver, Radiohead and The Beach Boys. Aged 22 now, he intends to continue exploring different genres in his writing and continue to perform with his backing band.

Pipedown! & GAIN Fest Present:

Avataar (Juno Nominated Jazz ensemble)

AVATAAR is a (2022) JUNO award-winning Toronto-based World Jazz group led by saxophonist/flutist/composer/vocalist Sundar Viswanathan.
Avataar is an award-winning world-jazz group based in Toronto. Our newest album Worldview (released on Oct. 29, 2021) just won the 2022 JUNO for Best Jazz Album (Group). The music is inspired by the deep musical traditions of India, Africa and Brazil, rooted within the framework of modern jazz. In an innovative marriage of ancient and modern, driving grooves intersect with cinematic atmospheres and soaring melodies, creating a fresh, emotive sonic experience. Bandmembers share an eclectic range of musical expertise – hardbop, pop, rock, electronica, free improvisation, world and R&B/Soul filter into the interpretations of the tunes.
The band’s original compositions are informed by artists including Shakti, Jarrett, Oregon, Jan Garbarek, Jobim, Robert Glasper, Snarky Puppy, Kenny Garrett and Ornette Coleman, and at their core are imbued with an intent toward political and social change and a spiritual focus that transcends the sound. While Avataar’s debut album, Petal, explored the evanescence of human life and was a call for a return to spiritual connectedness, Worldview attempts to also present a musical commentary on the state of our world, on the pandemic and on the inability of our leaders to lead with integrity, honesty and compassion. While the actions of our leaders affected so many, some of the songs started as gut responses to the treatment of children, our most valuable and vulnerable citizens, and act as vehicles of catharsis for the composer.
